Yeah I mean, I used to be an atheist and that's how I thought. My partner was also an atheist and that's the image of God he's arguing against - the mythological "character" as described in the Bible and Quran. The one who tells people to make war, condones rape etc.

Unfortunately that character of God is also what a lot of religious people use as justification for bigotry - for example many Christians who believe "God hates gays".

There's an interesting discussion between Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson about atheism you might enjoy. Jordan Peterson argues no one is really an atheist because his definition of God is different than what Sam Harris means when he talks about God. So they talked at cross purposes for a while. Interestingly, Sam Harris is actually what many people would call spiritual, while identifying as an atheist. Because he's more a panpsychist from a scientific perspective and Buddhist perspective. In his view being anti-theist is being against the human defined view of God as used to try and justify bigotry and be authoritarian. He's also a huge fan of the philosopher Alan Watts who believed in the Hindu view of Atman. I don't think he would disagree with a Spinozan view of God. However I think he would say that's not the God he's arguing against. It's interesting, the word God means so many things to different people.
