This seems like a stretch. How would the pagans not tolerate their descendants worshiping the gods of their fathers? Because they did tolerate that. Paganism tolerated a lot of syncretism (see the worship of Isis, worship of Antonius etc, worship of deified emperors) alongside the major Roman gods.
