This is why the Buddha says the root of suffering is desire. This is what he's talking about. The idea that happiness is found in the future. But this is an illusion. The future doesn't exist. Happiness is only ever found in the now. You have to learn to be present now, right now. Otherwise your life will pass by while you're looking over the horizon for something that never comes.
You don't have to sacrifice financial security for happiness. You can have both. I'm sure your wife would rather have you, present with her, sharing beautiful experiences, rather than a new car. The theory of abundance is that what you have, you attract. You don't attract from a mindset of lack and desperation. You attract from a mindset of gratitude for what you already have, which you can only feel if you actually stop to notice all the things you have already and appreciate them NOW. Life can actually become easier if you let yourself live in the present.
And in case you're wondering, I'm making over $120k myself at the age of 28, and it doesn't require me to sacrifice everything, I have good work life balance. It's possible.
