This is so valid. But also, while what's happening in Ukraine is awful, it's not uniquely worse than the wars that have been happening in the Middle East, Asia, South America and Africa for decades with almost no media coverage. A third of Afghanistan is literally starving to death. The situation is even worse in Yemen. The death toll in the Ukraine, while awful, is a tiny fraction of this. The media chooses what stories to make "the biggest in the world", what tragedies go viral and which ones do not. And usually it's to manipulate the public.

So you're not a bad person for refusing to participate in the media circus. You're not a bad person for not contributing to a situation that you have no control over.

I can't control what Russia does, I can't control if nuclear war happens, I can't control ecocide or climate change either. I actually worry way more about that than I do about war. But I can control the things that happen in my own life. I can vote with a clear head. I can divest from fossil fuels. I can donate to many good causes (and I do). I can help the people in my life with their mental health struggles. I can become a vegan. The things that I can do, I do. And everything else, I will not let it ruin the brief precious life that I have.

My suffering will not make the Ukrainians' lives any better. It won't stop a possible nuclear war either. But if a nuclear war did happen tomorrow, would suffering today make my suffering then any less? No all it would do is decrease the amount of happiness available to me in my short life.

I recommend you read my article "Feeling Inner Peace While the World Burns" as it goes into this in more detail.
