This is so true. I’m good friends with a family in this wealth bracket. They have a large house with views over Sydney Harbour. The father earns at least $500k per year as a managing director. The mother used to work for Shell but now she works in special education and votes for politicians that push for action on climate change. I know them because for the past 10 years I’ve babysat their autistic son. They’re wonderful kind people who have supported me in some of the hardest times in my life.

And yes, they don’t think that they’re rich. I once mentioned to their son that they were rich and his mother said “no we’re not, we’re comfortable". I said “no, you’re rich, that isn’t a criticism it’s just a fact". They have a gorgeous house with an ocean view in one of the most expensive suburbs in the most expensive city in the world. They can go for weeks long holidays around the world, they can charter a helicopter for their son’s birthday — but they don’t think they’re rich. It’s very strange.
