That's such a shame. I always think it's so sad when families see someone they love make a different choice than they would and then go "I don't recognise you anymore, your entire image is broken, was everything I loved about you a lie". When actually loved ones can be sex workers, drug addicts, criminals, have a different career, love different people, follow a different lifestyle, have a different sexuality or gender than they thought they were, a different political opinion than they thought they were, and STILL at the same time be the person they loved and knew.

It's rare that family ever knows everything about their children. And yet they feel entitled to the secrets, and then when they find out something that was hidden from them they feel betrayed, even though they weren't entitled to know these things and in fact should more be asking themselves why their loved one didn't feel safe opening up to them about these things.
