Something interesting that Alan Watts said was that the purpose of a guru or teacher is to give you exactly what you need to wake up, including resistance and mantras and steps to follow, which will only be useful as long as you think you need them. But that you will only be fully awake when you realise you don't need the guru anymore and you see through what they're doing. Because they're doing it deliberately (to help you, but in a roundabout way). Only YOU can know when you are awake and when you don't need them anymore.
You can wake up without needing a guru at all. But most of us are trapped in the self limiting belief that we are not enough to achieve enlightenment on our own, we believe subconsciously that we need to suffer for it and we need to spend 20 years following rigorous self discipline in order to awaken.
I am sure you'll be able to help others achieve transformational experiences via meditation and I applaud that goal, and I am also sure that when your students finally say "I don't need you anymore, I am awake" you will be proud of them and of yourself for helping them realise that.
