Shonda was not writing merely for Black audience she was writing for a mainstream (racially diverse) audience? Also, Yia did not claim that "Black women exist just to do work for her" like come on. That's a very disingenuous reading of what she actually said.
My interpretation of Yia's "Logic" is that "Shonda's erasure of non-Black POC in Bridgerton is indicative of how many Black people seemingly don't consider Asian people to be POC when they are, and there are many dark skinned Asian people that are more than just the light-skinned Asians we see make up the majority of all Asian representation in Western media". Which makes sense to me?
I feel Yia's piece spoke to how while diversity is a wonderful thing and representation is essential, the way it was written into this specific historical drama was poorly explained, thus lessening the real impact of what Black people experienced in Regency England, and if historical accuracy wasn't important then why not go all the way and include Asian characters, and if historical accuracy *was* important then why not include Indian people since they were a major part of the British Empire during that time and one of their major colonies.
Either way, a missed opportunity for some Asian representation.
That said I did enjoy the show and just saw it as fantasy not a historical drama.
