Lots of white people do care. However I feel like sometimes, as a white person who doesn’t live in the USA, posting, sharing or making a comment post about a video like the death of George Floyd, is not going to change anything as literally everyone I know is equally horrified and me posting about it would be more an attempt to go “look at me I’m not racist” to my echo chamber that I fear would cancel me for not saying something.
Right now it feels as a well meaning ally, that I’m being bombarded with multiple conflicting messages. White people need to “stop being silent” but at the same time “white people need to learn to shut the fuck up”. White people “need to use their privilege for good” but at the same time “as a white person you should not advocate for black causes just be an ally” (whatever that means). White people need to “get woke and listen to black voices” but at the same time “asking black people to educate you is a form of emotional labour and a microaggression”.
I want to help but it seems like there’s no way to get it right. And performative posting on social media, or for that matter going on a riot in a different country that is the other side of the world to the US and will have NO IMPACT on US racial justice is again, it feels performative and I don’t want to be performative I want to be genuine.
