I’ve wondered about this myself. I am not religious, but I’ve had spiritual experiences while on psychedelics. And while I know that the drugs affected the brain and that’s why I felt the way I did, it’s because psychedelics connect parts of the brain that don’t normally communicate. Therefore I was able to put together things that normally I wouldn’t perceive.

It made me realise that the “truth” behind the universe is hidden behind metaphors that are the only ways our brain can understand it. And we only see one angle of the “truth” at a time. Mathematics is one way to look at it. Fractals. Physics is one way. String theory. Quantum mechanics. Music is one way. Neuroscience is one way. Art is one way. Poetry is another. Religion another still.

We mistake words themselves for meaning, when the meaning of what we feel is behind the words, bigger than we can ever grasp.

Perhaps an AI could put these disparate things together and glimpse the “whole”.

As such, it would experience the divine.
