It’s possible for people not to give 100% glowing reviews of a book that you enjoy, without it being a sign of “PC culture gone mad”. I wonder if you realise that. Even the excerpt you posted, where the character considers murder-suicide as a valid option to express “love” is discomforting. I realise that’s the point, but it’s not like people need to “enjoy” reading it, or need to laud the characters for being unlikeable. We may empathise with unlikeable or “bad” characters while reading good fiction, that’s one of its main strengths, same with good television like Mad Men or Breaking Bad. At the same time, a review is supposed to give readers an inkling of what to expect. So to make it clear that the characters objectify women, are alcoholics with possibly violent tendencies, and are racist, but the story empathises with them, is a review doing its job, giving people an idea of whether, given the subject matter, they want to read it. Because even if literature is good, doesn’t make it for everyone. And that’s OK.
