I'm Australian and that doesn't sound like anything I've experienced. What part of Australia are you living in? In Sydney there's quite an expectation of being open and vulnerable with the "it's OK to not be OK" and Black Dog initiatives etc.

"Australians of any gender are never allowed to express their inner selves" - that sounds awful and I'm not denying your experience. But that's not Australia as a whole. It does not ring true for what I've experienced. Which makes sense because it's a multicultural melting pot with over 25 million people so no experience is universal.
