I think you’re misunderstanding my point. Nowhere did I justify cruelty.
There’s a difference between whether a person is considered “normal” (something that will mean different things in different contexts) and whether they are experiencing something that is statistically rare (ie not normal).
This is why I said you would be normal in many ways and weird in many others, just like EVERYONE.
Things that are “normal” in the US (statistically):
- being white
- making the average wage
- living in the city
- speaking English
- being able-bodied
- being between the age of 33 and 59
- being overweight
- having a high school diploma
- being in debt
- being Christian
- having high blood pressure
- drinking coffee every day
- etc
Things that are “not normal” statistically in the US:
- having red hair
- being a twin
- being Hindu
- being an atheist
- being vegan
- being really fit
- etc
Of course I could have used more morally charged things that are considered “normal” or “not normal” but I chose neutral things because I am trying to make the point that whether you’re trans or not is not the only factor that makes you be considered normal or not.
Of course trans people are “normal” in many ways. Many of them would fall into the categories I put in the “normal” category above.
But being trans is like having natural red hair. It’s statistically not common. Saying otherwise is just false.
And no I’m not saying that this justifies bigotry!! At all!! Why the fuck would it be an excuse to discriminate against someone because they are different but don’t hurt anyone??
The issue is not whether being trans is “normal” or not. The issue is bigoted people who can’t tolerate people being different. And those kind of people tend to be intolerant of other differences, whether sexual, racial, ethnic, cultural, lifestyle, religion, belief etc.
