I think what you're referring to is less "twin flame" but more the animus from Jungian psychology. The animus is the male side of the psyche (if you're a woman) and you can see the animus projected onto all your male partners and men into your life, because it's your shadow side pointing you towards important lessons and growth.

For men this is called "the anima" and is their female side of the psyche.
