I think it's partly to do with a backlash against what seems to have been a very premature one-sided cancellation of Johnny Depp a few years ago. Anyone who dared defend him a few years ago (or even say "why don't we wait for all the evidence to come out before we make a decision") would be shouted down and called a misogynist, the way anyone who defends Amber Heard today is shouted down.
