I think if you're going to have rape in a story, have the victim actually be traumatised by it - not for a single episode, but for a long time. Show the actual way it affects people.

While I think Outlander's rape of Jamie was done in a way that was gratuitous in the show (we didn't need 40 minutes of slow sexual and psychological torture, they could have had the same event occur without having to show every single horrific detail) what I did appreciate is that the whole of season 2 depicts how it affected Jamie and healing is a VERY slow process, and even in season 4 and 5 20+ years on you can see that Jamie is still changed by it.
