I don't want to takeaway from how brilliant this piece is (and it is brilliant) - but I wanted to say that the article you linked isn't as conclusive about the necessity of cursive as you say here.

I learned cursive. But I also found myself printing naturally because it was easier for me. And then over time my printing as I wrote faster and faster, became its own form of cursive, the letters connecting up etc. But not in the prescribed way, in a way that felt more natural to me. I did very well at school and my handwriting didn't hold me back at all.
