I definitely agree that porn does not cause violence.

But I do think a culture that doesn't give proper sex ed, where porn becomes people's sex ed - the prevalence of certain porn "tropes" like choking and degradation (things that may be common fantasies but nowhere near as common desires in women for what they ACTUALLY want in sex) has led to a rise in the enactment of these tropes in real life. Choking is the one I return to because most people don't actually want to be choked out during sex even if it's arousing to watch during porn. And it wasn't very common a few decades ago, but the rise in choking deaths and injuries have been dramatic recently, and it correlates to the rise in that trope in pornography.

Does that "prove" that it caused the rise in choking? No. Do I think it did cause the rise in choking? Yes.

And anecdotally I know of a lot of women who speak about choking and rough sex being "expected" of them now, when it's not their kink, but the prevalence of it in porn makes them think "everyone's doing it and I'm a prude if I don't want to".

No shame to people for whom it IS their kink - they're the ones who are going to be engaging in it in a safe, sane, consensual way.
