Honestly I think it depends again on the "role" the primate plays in the mind of whoever is having the attitude. So members of the public who see gorillas and chimps as "zoo animals", killing them is anathema. But to scientists who vivisected chimps and performed horrendous experiments on them for "science", they didn't care. Because in their mind the "role" of the animal supersedes its nature as a feeling being.
