Good article but I would argue animal liberation is different from the others you mention because the animals can't speak for themselves. They also are not demanding privileges. They just want to live, like all beings do. The animal rights/vegan/environmental movement still has the self-serving virtue signalling activists, but in general in my experience the animal rights movement calls into question the very divisions that lead to tribalism and identity politics. They say - why do we define the only suffering that matters as human suffering? When feminism, anti-racism etc focus on only specific types of human suffering, animal rights focuses more on suffering as a whole. Likewise, animal rights activists in general don't see the average person as "evil", because they remember when they too used to eat meat, exploit animals etc. Of course there are firebrand animal rights activists, and I sympathise with their rage, but I also don't think it's terribly helpful from a pragmatic perspective. I think compassion and empathy is what shifts people's mindsets.

A great example of how the animal rights movement has the ability to transcend tribalism is the documentary "Unity". It's the best documentary I've ever seen, and is essentially about empathy for all life, and reducing suffering. It focuses on the causes of all exploitation, division, tribalism, racism, sexism, war, consumerism, environmental destruction and the wanton killing of animals by humanity. All of this is shown to be the belief that we are separate - that we are alone. That creates in-groups and out-groups. Those who matter, those we feel empathy for, and those who don't. But if we shift our perspective to realising how connected we are as individuals, to everything and everyone - we can become the custodians and guardians of life on earth. It's very beautiful. It's what made me a vegan actually, even after I saw Earthlings it was more horrific footage but it was so awful my mind had a defence mechanism against it, because I didn't want to think about how I was contributing to all that. But Unity has a more positive, loving, and compassionate message. An inspiring message. The sort of message that brings everyone together rather that shows one side to be evil and one side to be a victim. And that is effective as hell.
