Exactly! Mental illness is not a quirky superpower. It’s not “fun”.
Neurodivergence is a good thing in some respects (e.g. I have synaesthesia which is cool and has no downsides) but damn, mental illness can wreak havoc on people’s lives. It’s not a fake thing that society made up. It exists. And people who have it, wish they didn’t fucking have it.
I have depression, my boyfriend has schizophrenia, one of my best friends has bipolar II. And none of these things are “cool”. We’re all creative people, yes. But I beg to differ with the author who thinks mental illness MAKES you creative. I think we’d still be pretty damn creative and in fact MORE creative than we are now, if we weren’t being held back by our illnesses.
