Agreed. There are a number of other problems associated with reparations:

  1. Who gets them? Just the descendants of slaves? Or should we include black immigrants who are still treated by society the same as those black Americans who really were descendants of slaves? Do we give more to people who have more ancestors linked to slavery? Do we give more to people who are more visibly black, compared to people who have slave ancestors but are mixed race or may even now be white passing?
  2. Do we give it equally to all slave descendants or only those in poverty? There are some black celebrities and millionaires who don’t need the money, for example.
  3. Will writing a single check solve racism? Because honestly if reparations happened the government (and white society) would view it as wiping the slate clean. If racism wasn’t solved after that, and black people were still disadvantaged, people would say “well you got your reparations, what more can you possibly want?”

Is that the kind of outcome we really want?
