Actually the etymology of the word is connected to the Latin word "mensis" meaning month. Same with "menstruation". Nothing to do with "men". English is just a bastard language.

In fact, the word "man" originally meant "human" and was just gender neutral. It only became associated with adult males, about 1000 years ago.
