$60k for gaming over a lifetime is a suspicious claim. I would very much doubt that most people who game ever spend that much over their lifetime. But the value of a $60 videogame that you spend 500+ hours playing, is a very good return on investment as a recreational activity.
As for an expensive engagement ring - my engagement ring is plain silver with panthers on it. My partner took it off his own finger and gave it to me (it fit perfectly). Did that make the proposal less magical? No, the night I got engaged was the most profound experience of my life.
I think wearing a ring as a symbol of love is a beautiful concept. However it shouldn't be about a flashy display of wealth. In my experience, it's only shallow and wealthy people that care about how much a ring cost (and they're the ones that spend $60k on a ring). Most people I know in real life can't tell the difference between a diamond and a cubic zirconia, and wouldn't be able to estimate the cost of a ring by sight with any degree of accuracy.
Yes, some people care about flashy displays of wealth and that's their right. I'm not saying I don't like nice things, I spend quite a bit on clothes myself (because I like how they look on me, not because they are branded a certain way).
Just I personally don't care for expensive rings, or diamonds for that matter. If I was super wealthy and was going to buy an expensive piece of jewellery it would more likely be a necklace, and would be an Australian Opal (opal rings are very fragile and can get damaged very easily).
